Financial Aid
United Way 211 Hotline NC 211 is an information and referral service provided by United Way of North Carolina. Families and individuals in all 100 counties in North Carolina can call to obtain free and confidential information on health and human services within their community. Available in most languages, NC 211 is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Education & Employment
Johnston-Lee-Harnett Community Action Head Start program provides pre-school services to pregnant mothers and for children 6 weeks to 4 years old.
Early Learning Center Provides childcare for children 6 weeks to 5 years of age
Safety
Domestic Violence & Sexual Abuse Harbor, Inc. offers shelter to victims of domestic violence or sexual assault or displaced homemakers for up to 45 days for women and children. The Crisis Line is available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week: 919-631-5478. They also provide referrals to legal services.

The Smithfield Rescue Mission The Smithfield Rescue Mission exists to proclaim the love of Jesus for those who are homeless and in crisis. We do this by providing shelter, life necessities, and life-changing programs to break the cycle of poverty.

Johnston-Lee-Harnett Community Action The S.T.A.R.S. Program is a self-sufficiency program designed to help low-income residents in Johnston, Lee and Harnett County identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented them from becoming independent. S.T.A.R.S. areas of concentration include: Employment, Education, Housing, Financial Literacy (budgeting) and goal-setting. Hope Chest @ Edgerton Hope Chest provides quality, gently used clothing for our neighbors. For more information or to volunteer, please call or text our office at 984-310-4710. We are always interested in welcoming people who can help Edgerton continuously grow this ministry. It’s been around for many years and has impacted many people, both as givers and receivers, and with God’s blessings it will be around for many years to come.
Food Pantry @ Edgerton Since 2004, Edgerton has sponsored a food pantry serving low and moderate income families residing in Johnston County. Hours of Operation: Thursdays 8:30am – 11am

First Baptist Church of Smithfield The Community Kitchen prepares and distributes meals and food to many areas of our county. Plates are prepared each Monday to go to shut-ins, disabled and food insecure people. Frozen meals and canned goods are available in our church office. Every Friday during the summer, the Unto Me ministry delivers meals to children and their families in need. Bread is picked up on Thursdays to be given away to families. (operating hours: Monday & Thursday 10:00 am – 12:00pm; must show ID),
PIZAZZ - Harbor Inc.’s Upscale Retail Boutique Upscale clothing, shoes, jewelry and handbags at a very reasonable price. All proceeds go towards Harbor’s lifesaving programs. When you shop at pizazz, you are helping another person find Hope, Healing and Empowerment
Partnership for Children of Johnston County The Johnston Inclusion Support Services Program provides consultation, technical assistance and training to childcare providers and families of children in care when there is a developmental, behavioral, or social-emotional concern The Child Care Referrals and Family Services section provides assistantce such as diapers, baby formula, emergency clothing, and emergency utility assistance (depending on availability) Available is a Pre-K for qualifying 4 year old children Car seats can be bought at a minimal cost
Boys & Girls Club of Johnston County Community based organization providing young people ages 6 to 16 with a fun, safe, and constructive after-school environment.
Autism Society of NC (Johnston County Local Unit) Provides support and counseling for parents of autistic children.
NC Works Career Center is a government service designed to help area residents find employment, meet the needs of businesses by training and educating the local workforce, assist area businesses in filling their job openings, and offer assistance in paying for schooling. They have an extensive website and offer many locally tailored resources.
Johnston County Industries at 1100 E Preston St, Selma helps persons with disabilities find employment with local businesses. For those who may consider themselves to have aged out of the workforce and have low income
Work First Family Assistance provides work opportunities for welfare recipients. It is located at 714 North Street, Smithfield, NC and can be reached at 919-989-5342.
The National Council on Aging provides both job training and placements for those 55 years and older.
